Optional Chinese herbal medicine: initial herbal consultation +$50, herbs charged separately. This includes a detailed Chinese medicine herbal assessment, an individualised formula, a review of your perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms, and the formula preparation and prescribing work undertaken outside the appointment.
Herbal medicine is generally prescribed in two-week quantities so the formula can be reviewed and adjusted as symptoms change. The $50 fee applies to the initial prescription — routine adjustments are included as part of ongoing treatment. A further fee applies only where a substantial reassessment or major reformulation is required.
Menopause isn't one thing
Two women the same age can be having completely different experiences of the same transition. One can't sleep. One is furious by four in the afternoon. One is fine until the flushes start.
Chinese medicine doesn't treat menopause as a single presentation with a single answer. Treatment is built around your individual pattern, and around the symptoms that are actually bothering you — which might be temperature regulation, or sleep, or mood, or energy, or how much stress you can absorb before it shows.
What's treated is reviewed each visit and adjusted, because this stage of life doesn't hold still.
Dr Cynthia White, RN & Doctor of Chinese Medicine, works alongside your existing medical care rather than in place of it.
How the treatment works
-
Step 1: Assess
We go through what you're actually experiencing, and how it's changed over the past months.
-
Step 2: Prioritise
We agree what to work on first — usually sleep or temperature, because everything else follows them.
-
Step 3: Treat
Individualised acupuncture, with Chinese herbal medicine where appropriate.
-
Step 4: Review
Symptoms are reviewed every visit and the treatment is adjusted as things shift.
Questions you might have
Can I have this alongside HRT or MHT?
Yes, and many clients do. Bring the details of anything you're taking to your assessment so treatment and any herbal prescription can be planned around it. Chinese medicine is used alongside your medical care rather than in place of it — decisions about hormone therapy stay between you and your doctor.
Will it stop my hot flushes?
That's not something anyone can promise, and response varies considerably. What we can say is that flushes and night sweats are among the specific symptoms tracked at each visit, and treatment is directed at them rather than at menopause in general. If nothing is shifting after a fair trial, that's information, and the approach is changed or reconsidered.
I'm not sure whether I'm perimenopausal.
Diagnosing where you are in the transition is a conversation for your GP, and blood tests may or may not be useful depending on your stage. This treatment works from what you're experiencing rather than from a label — if your sleep, temperature, mood or energy have changed, there's something to assess and work with.
How often would I come in?
Usually more frequently at first, then spacing out as things settle. The pattern depends on how disruptive your symptoms are and how you respond. It's discussed at your first appointment and revisited as you go, rather than sold as a package upfront.
What does the herbal medicine add?
It works between appointments, where acupuncture alone can't. The initial herbal consultation is $50 and covers a detailed assessment, an individualised formula, and the prescribing work done outside your appointment. Formulas are dispensed in two-week quantities so they can be reviewed and adjusted as symptoms change, and routine adjustments are included in your ongoing treatment.
What happens in my first appointment?
Sixty minutes, beginning with a full Chinese medicine consultation and pattern diagnosis — your symptoms, your cycle if you still have one, your sleep, energy and stress tolerance. Treatment is then individualised to that assessment. Where Chinese herbs are appropriate, they're prescribed to your pattern, following traditional use.
