What's Really Behind Your Dry Skin

Dry skin is rarely just about what you're putting on it. Hormonal changes — particularly through perimenopause and menopause — reduce the skin's ability to hold moisture. Stress depletes it further. And everyday lifestyle factors, from sleep to hydration to heating and air-conditioning, quietly strip the skin's barrier over time.

Understanding what's driving your dryness is where we start. The treatment itself then does the hands-on work — restoring circulation, hydration and comfort to skin that's been depleted.

Dr Cynthia White, Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner, combines clinical facial therapy with acupuncture, targeted products, and herbal support where needed.

Questions you might have

Why does my skin stay dry no matter what I use?

When moisturiser stops making a lasting difference, it often means the skin's barrier and circulation need hands-on support, not just another product on top. This treatment works on the skin directly, while also looking at the hormonal and lifestyle factors that may be contributing.

Is my dry skin related to my hormones?

Often, yes. Dryness frequently increases through perimenopause and menopause as hormonal shifts affect how well the skin holds moisture. Stress and lifestyle play a role too — the assessment considers all of these, not just the skin's surface.

Will this suit my sensitive, easily-irritated skin?

Yes. This treatment uses no fragrance, no stripping cleansers and no harsh exfoliants. Your skin's current state is assessed before anything is applied, and the approach is adjusted to how reactive your skin is.

Does the acupuncture hurt?

The needles are very fine — considerably finer than those used for injections or blood tests. Most people describe a dull ache or a feeling of warmth, and many find the session deeply relaxing. If you're needle-averse, say so at your assessment and the treatment can be adapted.

Do I need to stop using my current skincare?

Not before your first appointment. Bring what you're using, or a photo of the labels. Part of the assessment is understanding what's on your skin now, and any changes are discussed with you, not imposed.

What happens in my first appointment?

Sixty minutes, beginning with a full skin and health assessment. Treatment may include face and body acupuncture, deep hydration therapy, a nourishing herbal mask, gua sha and lymphatic massage, and LED light therapy. Where Chinese herbs are appropriate, these are prescribed to your individual pattern, following traditional use.

Why this works when other treatments haven't

Persistent dryness is often treated only at the surface — richer creams, more occlusives — without looking at why the skin has become so depleted. This treatment works on the skin directly, restoring circulation, hydration and barrier comfort in the room, while also considering the hormonal, stress and lifestyle factors behind it. That's not a guarantee of an outcome. It's a more complete approach.
